Consumer Unit Upgrades

Attached is a recent consumer unit upgrade completed by Lawson Electrical in Leigh on sea. It was a well needed change over as the previous unit was outdated, not up to regulations and had no RCD protection.

What does my consumer unit do?

The consumer unit is the hub for all your electrics within the house. It allows you to control and isolate every circuit in your house from the same place. Each consumer unit will offer some form of protection however, there are different levels of protection. Most modern consumer units will incorporate RCD protection in some form and should also now include surge protection.

What does an RCD do?

RCD's are an incoming device that has your main power supply entering it and passes it on to a circuit(s) in your house. The RCD monitors for any imbalance between live and neutral in your circuits. As soon as imbalance is detected it will almost instantaneously disconnect the supply to the circuit. This prevents there from being a power surge and helps to protect from electrical shocks that can be hazardous to human life!

What is an SPD and what does it do?

An SPD (surge protection device) is a little unit that will sit in your consumer unit ready to protect against transient voltages. If lightning strikes within close proximity to your home, it can damage the local grid and cause a rush to your electricity supply. As the average household is now filled with expensive electrical goods fed by your main supply this can cause significant damage. Many expensive goods in your home can be ruined and not to mention your whole electrical installation. A surge protection device takes this overload of electrical supply and disperses it safely through earthed cables.

Positive Input Ventilation Installs in Southend-On-sea and surrounding areas.

The cost of heating a home has increased significantly. Given this, it is no wonder many people are trying their best to reduce the amount of time they have the heating on. Unfortunately, this can give rise to damp and eventually mould as the heating is not on enough to dry out some of the damp houses naturally experience over time. A PIV system can be used to combat this and help prevent damp and the development of mould.
