What is a surge?
A surge or transient overvoltage, occurs when there is a spike in voltage on power lines. They are large and can be up to 6000V within an electrical installation. The most common reason for a surge is a lightning strike on or near to a power line. The building itself will usually withstand a strike or surge but the cost to electrical equipment attached or contained within can be significant.
A surge protection device is designed to protect the installation and any devices or equipment plugged into it such as TVs and PC's. It does this by blocking the excess voltage or dispersing it to the ground through earthing.
When is surge protection required?
As of 22nd March 2022, Amendment 2 to the 18th edition of BS7671 wiring regulations was released. This states that SPDs are required in any place where there is a risk of significant financial or data loss. Given the number of devices and electronic equipment in most modern homes, this covers the vast majority of domestic properties. Furthermore, the cost of a TV alone is not worth risking considering a surge protection device now costs between £30-£50.
Lawson Electrical now fit surge protection with any CU upgrade or new circuit installation as standard. If you would like a quote for SPD installation or any further information, please don't hesitate to get in contact using the button below.
